What Were the Most Popular 2019 Oscar Winners

With award season coming to an end with the passing of the 91st Academy Awards this past Sunday, here is a look back at the movies who stole the show (and won some major awards for it).

We, of course, have to start with the Oscar winner for Best Picture, so if you haven’t seen this number you may need to move it to the top of your movie night watchlist. Green Book won not only Best Picture, but also Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay. The movie is about a world-class African-American musician who goes on a concert tour in the deep south accompanied by his driver, a tough-talking Italian-American from the Bronx. The sheer contrast of their two characters alone challenges viewers’ perceptions and provides a depth to the characters that could not otherwise be achieved.

While only winning one Oscar, Best Original song, A Star is Born stole hearts around the country. The movie was the most popular 2018 release in six states across the nation according to a recent study, making it the third most popular release of the year. This is the third adaptation of the film, which was made in 1937, 1976 and then, of course, 2018. It features Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga and if you haven’t had a chance to see the film, be prepared to cry when you do.

Another popular movie that won awards this season was the Marvel film Black Panther. The movie took home awards for Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design, and for good reason. The film features entrancing costumes and the backgrounds are eye-catching and reflect the moods of the scenes.

Bohemian Rhapsody is another movie focused around music, taking home the awards for Best Actor, Best Sound Editing, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. The film follows the band Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury through the rise of the band to his discovery that he has contracted AIDs. It’s a very important film about being true to yourself and going against the current.

Other winners from Sunday include BlackKklansman, The Favourite, Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Vice, Free Solo, First Man, Bao, Skin and Period. End of Sentence.
