Original Star Wars Marvel Comics Returning This Month

Star Wars has spawned many franchise spin offs including TV specials, series, novels and comic books. Marvel launched the first Star Wars comic series in 1977 because Lucas felt the movie needed all the publicity it could get, and a Marvel movie adaptation would be a good way to get the word out there.

Of course the film did just fine, and the comic series did incredibly well as a result. In fact, the former editor in chief of Marvel has said that the Star Wars series saved the company from going under. Now you can revisit the Star Wars comics, thanks to an omnibus collection Marvel will be releasing on January 27.

According to the Marvel website, this will include forty-five issues of the comics with writing and artwork from Marvel alumni like Roy Thomas, Howard Chaykin, Archie Goodwin, and more.

As Marvel editor in chief Axel Alonso said on the site, “I am extremely proud to present these original Star Wars stories, told as only Marvel can, in the first in a massive and glorious Omnibus series.” And along with the next Star Wars movie, we’ll be very curious to see where the Star Wars comics will be headed in the new year as well, but in the meantime, we’re sure Marvel fans will enjoy this great blast from the past.
