US consumers bought more than 400 million DVDs in Q1

The US movie industry reported strong sales of DVDs for the first quarter of this year. According to the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG), sales jumped about 21 percent from 332 million units in the first quarter of 2004 to 403 million. The total number of DVDs sold in the US since the introduction of the format topped 4.3 billion units.

The organization also reported DVD player sales of 7.5 million during the first three months of this year, bringing the total number to roughly 135 million. More than 73 million US homes are believed to have purchased DVD player, with 46 percent of households owing at least two players. (THG)
