“More than three years ago, we set out to completely change the way people use their desktops.” That’s the mission statement from a start-up company that received the ultimate dream: a buyout from Google.
BumpTop created what it calls a “3D desktop,” a brand new design for the standard interface to which PC and Mac users have grown so accustomed.
BumpTop allows users to group their desktop icons into organized stacks or piles, and can view them in a variety of display options.
The start-up replaced its Web site with a short message about its Google takeover: “Today, we have a big announcement to make: we’re excited to announce that we’ve been acquired by Google!”
Effective immediately, sales of BumpTop’s software have been suspended, as have all future updates. That is, until Google figures out what to do with it all.
A free version of BumpTop remains available for download for the next week, and then after that any future downloads will be under Google’s purview.
BumpTop was first introduced in 2006.
