Twitter has acquired web security firm Dasient, in a move which could make clicking on URLs in the social network a little safer.
Dasient was founded in 2008 by a team of security experts and ex-Google staff. Its technology scans web addresses to detect harmful content, and the company also operates a service aimed at keeping online advertising free of malware.
“Over the last year, we have been very active in securing the ads and content of the some of the industry’s largest ad networks and web sites,” says the company on its blog.
“By joining Twitter, Dasient will be able to apply its technology and team to the world’s largest real-time information network.”
The company says it’s now winding down its business and is no longer accepting new clients; all its technology, tools and staff will be transferred to Twitter’s ‘revenue engineering’ – advertising – team. Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed.
The acquisition should help Twitter with its plans to expand revenue from advertising, including Promoted Tweets and its self-serve ad platform, launched late last year with a small number of advertisers. It’s expected to broaden this out this year.
Twitter’s long been plagued by malware and spam attacks, and this isn’t its first security-related acquisition. In November, it bought Whisper Systems, which specializes in mobile device security and data encryption for the Android operating system.
