Zuckerberg doesn’t quite make world’s richest list

Mark Zuckerberg hasn’t qualified as one of the richest men in the world, but we’re sure he’s not too upset about it.

The founder of Facebook, whose net worth was set to skyrocket as soon as the company’s initial public offering (IPO) was announced, hasn’t quite eclipsed the Bloomberg Billionaires list of the 20 wealthiest people on the planet.

On the list were the usual suspects, including #2 Bill Gates at $62.4 billion and #3 Warren Buffett who chimed in with $43.8 billion. In total, nine of the 20 are Americans, the highest-represented nationality on the list.

At #1, though, is a Mexican. Carlos Slim controls the country’s mobile behemoth America Movil SAB. His net worth was calculated to be $68.5 billion. The telecommunications tycoon is 72 years old.

As for Zuckerberg, analysts peg his net worth at around $21 billion, or a little more than one-fifth of the entire valuation of Facebook, which is set to issue 500 million shares of class-B stock.

Last on the list is 89-year-old Liliane Bettencourt, whose family owns a 31% stake in the cosmetics company L’Oreal.

Zuckerberg’s relative value is below what previous estimates had suggested, though no one can rightly complain about being worth more than $20 billion.

That number puts Zuckerberg right on the cusp of Bloomberg’s list. Of course, he is about one-third or one-fourth the age of those who did make the list. It’s probably only a matter of time before he crosses over.
