Microsoft’s migration of Hotmail users to Outlook doesn’t seem to be going quite to plan. A series of outages in both services has left people unable to access their emails.
Microsoft’s acknowledged the problem, which started yesterday. Outlook’s failing to display all of a user’s emails, and at one point the calendar function was failing to work properly too.
In its latest update, Microsoft says the problem’s taking longer to fix than it hoped. It’s promising another update later today, but Twitter users gettinng impatient – especially as many of them dislike the new software anyway.
Microsoft isn’t giving a reason for the outages. But it seems likely it’s related to the company’s recent decision to scrap Hotmail and move users across to Outlook instead.
It recently launched a new version of Outlook, boasting a new Metro-style interface and better performance. At the time, the director of product management, David Law, promised Hotmail users a ‘seamless and instant’ transition.
However, users have been complaining of intermittent problems since January, when the switch-over work began. It’s not likely to be finished until the summer.
Cloud storage service SkyDrive, too, suffered problems last night that lasted several hours. Many users were unable to add, edit or remove files. This problem, though, appears to be unrelated, and the service is now running normally, says Microsoft on its service status page.
