Microsoft Surface Pro hits $999 for 128GB

Microsoft has confirmed pricing for its Intel x86-powered Surface tablet: $899 for the 64GB standalone iteration and $999 for the 128GB standalone version. Both will be available in January 2013.

Want a touch cover or a type cover? Well, you’ll have to shell out an additional $120 and $130, respectively. However, the two tablets do include a Surface pen with Palm Block technology. As expected, the general appearance of the devices are pretty much the same as the Surface RT, with dark titanium VaporMg casing, dual 2×2 MIMO antennas and a kickstand.

Instead of a RISC-based Nvidia Tegra 3 ARM processor, the Surface Pro is equipped with Intel’s x86 Core i5 processor that drives a 10.6” 16:9 ClearType display running at a full HD resolution of 1920×1080.

Surface with Windows 8 Pro also includes a full-size USB 3.0 port, while its Mini DisplayPort is capable of driving an external display up to 2560X1440 resolution. Surface with Windows 8 Pro also allows users to run Windows 7 desktop applications – with Microsoft hyping the device as both a full PC and a tablet.

Hence the high price point for Surface with Windows 8 Pro, which weighs in at under two pounds and measures less than 14 millimeters thick.

It should be noted that Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet starts at $499 for 32GB (without a touch cover), $599 for 32GB with a touch cover and $699 for 64GB with a touch cover.
