Activision’s secured the right to publish the next big franchise from Halo developer Bungie, bringing future games to new platforms.
The ten-year deal is the first such for Bungie since it split from Microsoft in 2007. Up to now, it’s produced games solely for the Xbox 360, but the Activision deal will see games appearing on other platforms.
Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on new ideas, on multiple platforms and devices.
“We’ll bring the new intellectual property to fans worldwide across all platforms,” said Thomas Tippl, COO of Activision. “This agreement is about bringing bs great new intellectual property to gamers worldwide on the platform of their choice.”
“We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,” said Harold Ryan, president of Bungie. “From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.”
To date, Bungie’s Halo games have generated approximately $1.5 billion in revenues, according to The NPD Group. The next title, Halo:Reach, will still appear as scheduled this fall.
The deal should help Activision take its mind off the questionable future of the Call of Duty series – the company is currently locked in a legal battle with developer Infinity Ward.
