D-Link builds a Boxee Box

D-Link and Boxee have showcased a set-top box that streams online and stored digital media to a television set.

According to Boxee CEO Avner Ronen, the device allows users to share playlists with friends on various social networking sites, including Twitter and Facebook. ??The Boxee Box also facilitates easy access to university courses, panel discussions, academic lectures, presentations and web-only videos.
?

Although the Box won’t be officially available until the second quarter of 2010, Boxee will release an updated software beta on January 7, 2009. ??

The beta – which offers similar options and functionality – features a redesigned home screen, global menu and library interface.

“We also changed the underlying graphic library on Windows from OpenGL to DirectX, and we’re now taking advantage of DXVA, which means Boxee for Windows just got faster and can play 1080p without your CPU breaking a sweat,” explained Ronen.

??”We plan to open up the Beta to the public on Jan 7th (at CES). Over the next 4 weeks we will gradually release invitations to our early access users (you can add your name to the early access list here) and then to existing alpha users. We hope your testing will help us identify any major issues and resolve them by the time of our public release.”??
