Microsoft won't give up on Mobile OS

It must have spent tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars promoting the Windows Mobile OS, but Microsoft is not going to quit fighting the Google Android and iPhone competition.

The software giant will introduce Windows Mobile 6.5 in early October and then in February next year introduce a touch interface version, according to Taiwanese wire Digitimes, which appears to have seen a Microsoft roadmap.

And it will introduce Windows Mobile 7 in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to the same report.

The suggestion is that Microsoft will compete with Google Android using Windows Mobile 6.5 and use Windows Mobile 7 to compete with the iPhone products.

But if these reports are true, it suggests that Microsoft is seriously behind both platforms in the smartphone market and gives its competitors a whole year to introduce upgrades to their respective families.

The Digitimes report is here.
