Carmack: Rage framerate 'lags' on Playstation 3

San Francisco (CA) – John Carmack has confirmed that the PS3 version of Rage runs at ‘just 20-30 FPS’ compared to 60 FPS on the PC.

Carmack – the founder of id software – told Edge Magazine that the PS3 does “lag a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it.”

According to Carmack, the RSX rasteriser was just a “little bit” slower on the PS3 compared to the Xbox 360.

“Processing wise, the main CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that’s where a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3,” said Carmack.

However, Carmack emphasized that the PS3 version would match that of other platforms.

“We expect this to be 60 hertz on every supported platform. The work remaining is getting it locked so there’s never a dropped frame or a tear, but we’re confident that we’re going to get that,” added Carmack.

It should be noted that Carmack had previously explained that more “sweat equity” was required to develop PS3 titles.

“The [Xbox] 360 was easier to certainly to get to where we are now. More sweat equity had to be put into the PS3 [which offers] a little bit more theoretical raw performance.”
