Gene therapy restores sight for British teenager

London (England) – A British teenager is slowly regaining his sight after receiving experimental gene therapy at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in England.  18-year-old Steven Howarth suffers from the genetic condition Lebers congenital amaurosis which slowly destroys the light sensing cells in the back of his eye.  Doctors at the hospital injected Howarth with cells with the faulty gene removed.

Howarth’s vision degraded until he couldn’t walk through a darkened room unassisted.  After the treatment he has now begun walking home at night, unassisted.

Howarth is the third person to receive this type of gene therapy.
