Creative launches Zen player based on new media processor

Austin (TX) – Creative today launched its latest Creative Zen player, the first to use Sigmatel’s STMP3700 processor designed specifically for portable devices.

The new credit card-sized Zen is available in 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB capacities.  An SD card slot is also included.  The 2.5-inch TFT display carries a resolution of 320×240.  The device can play back MJPEG, Windows Media, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4SP, Divx 4-5, and Xvid.  It also sports a USB connection for easy PC-to-device media transfer.

Also notable is that the new Zen is the first to use a new portable media processor.  The device runs on Sigmatel’s STMP3700.

The STMP3700 is based on the ARM standard.  The 90-nanometer processor is currently being used in development of numerous other PMPs, says Sigmatel.  It also plans to release a flexible software development kit (SDK) so manufacturers can use the same basic format but manipulate it to create their own user interfaces.

Sigmatel says other devices with the STMP3700 processor will be available by the end of the year.  The new Creative Zen retails for $150 – $300, depending on the capacity.
