Bedminster (NJ) – Giving more steam to the runaway train known as YouTube, Verizon today officially announced its plan to incorporate the video sharing site with its V Cast multimedia service.
The new mobile YouTube platform is planned to be available in early December, with no additional cost to the $15 monthly V Cast service. As part of the partnership, Verizon will be the exclusive mobile provider of YouTube content for an undisclosed length of time.
The mobile version will filter the videos to distinct channels, like most viewed, or videos with the most comments. Users will also be able to upload their own videos to the site directly through a compatible Verizon phone, making it easier for people to share on-location videos from the phone’s built-in camcorder.
The new move is as much of a strategic move for YouTube as it is for Verizon. The mobile service provider has had trouble catching as much market share as its top competitor, Sprint, in the mobile entertainment market. It is trying to re-invigorate interest in the V Cast service by striking the YouTube deal as an exclusive feature.
