San Jose (CA) – Asante Networks today announced that it will begin shipments of two SOHO routers in Q4 of this year.
The FriendlyNET FR204 and FR204G are four-port 10/100 Ethernet routers using a system-on-a-chip (SOC) routing engine. Both have single 10/100 WAN ports and the FR204G wireless model adds an 802.11g access point. Other features include SPI firewall, “auto uplink” ports and UPnP support.
When the products ship, it will represent a milestone on Asante’s road back to being a broad line networking product supplier. Asante started in 1988, grew to be a leading supplier of networking products for Apple Computer and went public in 1993. But when Apple fell on hard times, Asante also suffered and the company lost market share and passed into relative obscurity.
Asante was acquired last June by Techno Concepts of Van Nuys, CA. Although Techno Concepts is a fabless semiconductor company specializing in software radio technology, Asante has focused on fleshing out its product lines of workgroup and enterprise switches and network adapters.
No pricing or distribution strategy was announced for the routers.
