Formally launched yesterday, the Open NAND Flash Interface (ONFI) Working Group, which intends to back a chip-level interface proposed as a new standard for NAND flash memory devices, features five major members at the moment, and the most important absentee is Samsung Electronics, the leading producer of NAND flash. Last year, the company dominated the market with a 52.9% share, according to iSuppli. Samsung also supports objectives of the ONFI initiative, but it has some concerns about a few items in the ONFI legal agreement, the group said. The ONFI group stated it is currently working with Samsung to resolve those issues.
