1080p HD not supported by ATI, Nvidia?

We have been under the impression that ATI and Nvidia support full high definition video in 1080p resolution (1920×1080). That impression may be wrong if we believe an article over at FiringSquad.

The website claims, that neither ATI nor ATI graphics cards will be able to run videos in crisp 1080p due to the lack of HDCP support. At least ATI claimed in an interview with TG Daily last year, that the X1800XT “will be able to do up to 1080p.” Not necessarily incorrect, but it appears that it just isn’t possible, until HDCP is supported. And certainly disappointing for users who just emptied their pockets for a sparkling set of $500+ graphics cards.
