Argument erupts over dotcom ownership

ICANN, the organisation that oversees the internet, released details of a new contract that will give the current owner of the famous domain registry, VeriSign, control of all dotcoms for another six years, until 2012.

Part of the contract provides VeriSign with a “presumptive right of renewal” for the dotcom registry – which effectively gives the company a permanent monopoly over the most famous names on the internet.
