Gateway snubs Intel, puts AMD inside

Longtime Intel loyalist Gateway Inc. will introduce PCs based on the forthcoming K6-3 chip from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Due for a March debut, the new boxes reportedly will be based on the upcoming AMD chip, code-named Sharptooth, rather than Intel’s competing Celeron chips, according to PC Week Online. The substitution is expected to allow Gateway to offer the machines at prices substantially lower than comparable Intel-equipped systems.
