Dell mulls sub-$1,000 PCs

Dell Computer Corp. may join the hot market for computers priced at $1,000 or less. Currently, the company’s lowest-priced machines sell for $1,199.

In the past, Dell has said it avoided low-cost PCs because of skinny margins and the products’ tendency to attract novice buyers that are more costly to support. The company is hoping its investment in web-based self-service can reduce the service costs associated with selling to novice buyers.
