Intel, AMD set for CPU showdown

Intel Corp. begins shipping its Pentium III processor next week, just as Advanced Micro Devices Inc. announces its K6-III processor.

AMD’s chip features a three-level cache design, integrating 256 kB of onchip Level 2 cache and an additional 512 kB of external Level 3 cache, expandable to 2MB.

The 400MHz K6-III will begin shipping this month for $284. A 450MHz version will ship next month for $476. A 450MHz K6-2 chip is also due this month. AMD’s next-generation K-7 chip is slated for release at the end of the second quarter.
