Gateway will provide PC buyers with one year of free Internet service. The company simultaneously announced an investment in web reseller NECX.
One year of free Internet access is now included with the purchase of Gateway consumer desktop, portable and “convergence” systems costing more than $1,000. Customers will receive 150 hours of Internet use per month via Gateway’s ISP, gateway.net. Additional hours will be charged at $1.50 per hour, or $3.95 per hour for rural customers.
Gateway also revealed its purchase of a 19.9 percent stake in the e-commerce subsidiary of NECX, with the option to increase its share of the company. Gateway and NECX will together launch “SpotShop.com,” offering Gateway-branded products and more than 30,000 peripherals and software SKUs.
