Sun Microsystems Inc. has revealed that its upcoming MAJC processor will be optimized for processing complex graphics, ranging from voice data to video.
The architecture will be debut in a Sun workstation to be announced this fall, followed by an appearance in “thin client” guise, for devices such as set-top boxes. Another version of the chip will be designed for network applications, such as video or speech recognition servers.
The MAJC architecture allows for the execution of up to four instructions in parallel, and includes support for multi-threading.
MAJC also handles multiprocessing on a single die, allowing more than one processor to be integrated into a single chip package.
