Intel intends to build a line of networking processors, mirroring Intel’s recently revealed plans for its own high-performance, programmable network chip.
IBM hopes to leapfrog Intel by also introducing a switched fabric to connect the processors in a way that will enable bigger, faster switches and routers, IBM officials said.
The IBM plan focuses on a new family of processors that will take the place of ASICs in routers, hubs and switches. The chips will be programmable, unlike ASICs, which must be redesigned for each new device.
