New team takes aim at Netcasting

Digital Island, Inktomi, and RealNetworks have formed a strategic alliance to broadcast video and audio worldwide on the Internet.

Officials at Digital Island say they are in the process of improving their private computer network by integrating RealNetworks’ G2 software for delivering sound and video, and Inktomi’s data storage software.

The San Francisco-based company connects data centers and local ISPs in different countries to companies that do business on the Internet.

Digital Island says the network is the first of its kind for broadcasting sound and video on the Internet, which is becoming increasingly popular for playing music and broadcasting live events. The company says the new service will be available in October.
