Compaq scuttles Unix-on-Intel plans

Compaq has shelved plans to port its Tru64 version of Unix to run on Intel’s future IA-64 family of chips.

The hardware company has decided instead to focus on developing and marketing Tru64 only for its own chip, the Alpha.

The move resembles Compaq’s recent decision to curtail development of Alpha-based versions of Windows NT and its successor, Windows 2000.
