Intel will acquire networking manufacturer IPivot for about $500 million in cash.
Intel said the buyout is aimed at helping its customers manage high volume Web traffic and electronic commerce sites.
IPivot designs and manufactures “Internet commerce equipment,” a class of devices targeted at improving the performance of “server farms” – the computer banks that major Web sites use to manage millions of site visitors.
The IPivot deal marks Intel’s eighth communications-related acquisition this year.
