AltaVista sets sights higher

One of the first and most respected search services on the Internet intends to transforms itself into “a new media commerce network to be reckoned with.”

Starting today, AltaVista will offer three new services: a personalized portal offering real-time stock quotes, live sports scores, live breaking news and even live video cameras offering traffic reports from major cities; a new-and-improved search service covering more of the Internet; and an e-commerce site featuring content from 100,000 retailers.

Chief Executive Rod Schrock said the new service is designed to compete with the biggest Internet portals, including the most popular site, Yahoo!

AltaVista said it plans to spend a whopping $120 million on promotion between now and July.
