Hubble telescope upgrades to 486

The Space Shuttle astronauts touched down safely on Earth following their successful mission to resuscitate the Hubble Space Telescope, an event the included the installation of a new microprocessor to act as the “brains” of the high tech device.

NASA officials reported that astronauts Steve Smith and John Grunsfeld successfully upgraded the 386 chip that was driving the telescope, replacing it with a 486 processor.

Though far from state-of-the-art, the humble 486 is adequate for Hubble’s space surveying activities.
