DRAM alliance targets PC memory

An Intel-led alliance on DRAM technology will focus its efforts on developing a memory chip for the high-volume, low-end PC desktop and portable markets.

The announcement by the alliance – which includes Hyundai Microelectronics, Infineon Technologies, Micron Technology, NEC, and Samsung – ended speculation that the chip would be aimed at the networking processor or Internet appliance markets.

Officials say the chip will complement, not compete against, emerging DDR-2 SDRAM, a wideband, high capacity memory for servers and high-end workstations.
