Free-PC Inc. has notified its customers that even though it will no longer offer free Internet access, they will still be allowed to keep their free computers.
Some 25,000 Free-PC customers received both a free computer and free Internet access. The company made most of its revenue from advertising.
The decision follows the company’s merger with low-cost PC maker eMachines. A spokesman said that while the decision to give away the computers cost the company “in the millions,” the resources needed to provide both technical and customer service support for both free computers and free Net access was simply too much.
