IBM hopes to beef up its Web-based PC sales by offering same-day shipping for nine popular models.
The Armonk, N.Y.-based computer maker will guarantee that select orders placed before noon PST will be shipped the same day. However, it is not promising next-day delivery.
Typically, PC makers take five to 10 days to get customers systems following an order.
IBM last year largely stopped selling its Aptiva consumer PC in retail stores, taking the product line direct. The company expects the direct sales effort will mean it can discount PCs and notebooks by 30 percent.
