Will Microsoft open Windows?

Shortly after introducing his new OS to the world, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates was quoted as saying that his company would be willing to open the source code to its Windows operating system to settle the anti-trust lawsuit brought by the U.S. Justice Department.

However, a company spokesman later said Gates was misquoted, and that he “did not comment in any way on the mediation process or any settlement proposals” during his interview with Bloomberg Television.

Company President Steve Ballmer said last year that Microsoft had not ruled out making at least part of the Windows source code available for the public domain.
