Seagate claims hard drive speed title

Seagate Technology has introduced the world’s first 15,000-rpm hard drive.

Billed as the fastest hard drive ever built, the 18GB Seagate Cheetah X15 boasts an average seek time of 3.9-milliseconds.

An Ultra160 SCSI model is expected to be available in early July, followed by a fibre channel version. Prices have not yet been set.

The Scotts Valley, Calif.-based company expects the new drives to be targeted at a number of I/O-intensive applications.
