Loki, Creative launch open source 3D audio

Loki Entertainment and Creative Technologies have released an open source, 3D audio equivalent of SGI’s 3D graphics standard.

Called Open Audio Library, or OpenAL, the audio API will be available in MacOS, Linux and Windows versions.

3D-audio allows games and other applications to take advantage of spacialized sound effects, including distance and direction attenuation, panning and reverb.

Prior to OpenAL, there was no standard way to implement 3D-Audio for Linux.

The source code is freely available for download at www.openal.org.
