AOL: 'Gnutella' release unauthorized

America Online employees were said to be “acting on their own” when they designed and released a digital music playback software program.

Called Gnutella, the program competes directly with the controversial Napster software that lets users to swap digital music files.

AOL employees made the software available for download until the site was taken down earlier this week.
