Power-saving notebooks coming soon

AMD is close to releasing a notebook computer feature aimed at extending battery life by throttling back clock speed and voltage on its forthcoming K6-2+ and K6-III+ mobile chips.

Called PowerNow, the technology – similar to Intel’s SpeedStep technology – would provide an extra 30 percent to 50 percent of battery life, company officials said.

AMD notebooks with PowerNow should be available in late March or early April, while an Intel Pentium III with SpeedStep technology is due out in mid- to late April, sources said.
