No Internet tax expected anytime soon

A federal commission appears ready to endorse a congressional extension of up to five years of the current moratorium on new Internet taxes.

Heading into its final meeting this week in Dallas, a majority of the 19-member Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce is expected to extend the freeze beyond its current expiration date of October, 2001.

However, the commission remains divided on whether states eventually should be permitted to collect sales taxes on e-commerce.
