AMD resurrects 550MHz Athlon

AMD’s 550MHz Athlon processor – a chip many thought would be discontinued as the firm ramped up higher clock speeds – is for sale again, according to The Register.

The device is being offered in OEM packaging to dealers at about $169, making it competitive with Intel’s Celeron processors.

The move is reportedly part of AMD’s attempt to capitalize on supply problems with rival Intel’s Coppermine Pentium IIIs, and reflects an aggressive pricing strategy the company has planned for later this year.
