Intel is said to be considering the introduction of Pentium III chips at speeds faster than 1GHz in the second half of this year.
While company officials so far have not been specific about the next step for the PIII, “[I]f it is possible, we will do it,” Pat Gelsinger, an Intel vice president, said recently.
Likely speeds for the future gigahertz-plus chip, based on Intel’s 133MHz bus, are 1,066MHz, 1,133MHz and 1,200MHz.
The news comes as rival AMD is expected to launch the next-generation of its Athlon processor, based on the forthcoming Thunderbird core, next month.
