Seagate seeks quieter drives

Seagate has unveiled a “quiet drive” technology aimed at reducing acoustical noise in its disk drives.

The so-called “Sound Barrier Technology” will be featured as part of two Seagate drives: the newly-introduced U Series 5 drive, and a derivative designed for consumer A/V applications like a set-top box.

The Scotts Valley, Calif.-based company said the technology quiets the seek time of the drives by up 6 percent compared to the full-speed or “performance” seek option.
