Microsoft releases Outlook security patch

Microsoft has released a security patch to protect users of its Outlook email program against Love bug-type virus attacks.

The update, currently available free of charge from Microsoft’s Office Update Web site, blocks access to potentially unsafe file types that virus writers target, and sets higher default security settings than previous versions of the software, the company said.

The recent Love bug virus took advantage of well-known exploits involving Visual Basic, a high-level, graphically oriented programming language developed by Microsoft.
