Opto neural net packet-switcher demonstrated

Researchers in Edinburgh, Scotland have shown that it is possible to attain extremely efficient scheduling in telecommunications switching applications through the use of “diffractive optical elements” to provide inputs to an analog neural network. Though the prototype is far from ready for commercial applications at this time, the British developers believe the system will help overcome the limitations, both in speed and scalability, of digital switching systems.
