AOL proposes instant messaging standards

America Online has proposed new standards that would let rival instant messaging services work together.

The proposal, submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force, follows recent efforts by the company to prevent rival instant messenger services from tapping into AOL’s Instant Messenger without its consent, calling it a threat to the security and privacy of its members.
