Tech visa bill moves forward

The US Senate has voted to put an end to the debate concerning proposed legislation that would raise the number of H1-B visas from 115,000 to 195,000 next year, moving the bill one step closer to passage. US tech firms have lobbied hard to increase the number of technically skilled workers allowed into the USA, saying that the present rate of economic and technical progress cannot be sustained if non-US workers are not allowed into the country. While both political parties agree, in principle, that the increase is needed, efforts to tack additional legislation onto the “American Competitiveness in the 21st Century Act” has turned the bill into a political football and threatened its success. If not passed, the limit on H1-B visas would fall to 107,500 for the next year and to 65,000 the year after.
