Leading MP3 chipmaker, Micronas Semiconductors Inc., is reportedly withdrawing its cooperation from the Secure Digital Music Initiative. SDMI is the center of the entertainment industry’s efforts to control consumer usage of media files and the rejection by Micronas is seen by EE Times writers as the latest sign that the industry may be losing faith in the copyright protection campaign.
“The SDMI, so far, has yielded nothing,” says Rainer Hoffmann, president of Micronas Semiconductors. “SDMI confusion is handicapping the MP3 player market today.”
