A Merrill Lynch report indicates that Intel Corp. is willing to cut margins and profits to see that Pentium 4 chips maintain a dominant role in the PC chip market. Previous estimates, from a number of sources, put P4 totals for 2001 around 15 million, but Intel has reportedly told OEMs that it will deliver 18 million to 20 million P4s in 2001. The same report also says that the pace of speed competition between Intel and Advanced Micro Devices will slow in the coming year.
