Researchers from the Universities of Rome and Salerno have discovered that narrow steel wire can transmit sound waves that can be converted to mechanical energy. A compression wave can be sent through long, flexible, acoustic waveguide to turn a rotor, opening significant possibilities for designers of electromechanical microsystems who could use acoustic fibers where electrical avenues are not practical.
