Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Middelhoff said of his company’s subsidiary, Napster, “I’m convinced we can introduce in June or July of this year a subscription model – with a real working digital rights management system.”

These comments bolster comments by Napster CEO Hank Barry who recently confirmed plans for a summer launch of a fee-based business. Some analysts wonder if Napster will have sufficient inventory as Bertelsmann BMG, with a few smaller labels, are the only firms that have made music legally available for downloading to the company. Other major labels maintain lawsuits against the file-sharing company.
